International group calls for improved brain injury care
In May 2026, an international group focused on promoting improved diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) published an article in The Lancet, a leading medical academic journal.
In the article, the Global Coalition for TBI as a Notifiable and Chronic Condition call for timely, safe, and quality care for TBI, particularly among individuals living in low-income and middle-income countries. Authors suggest that the chronic burden of TBI needs to be recognized globally, and lasting and meaningful changes need to be made at all points of the care continuum in order to support patients.
Specifically, the authors call for better education of insurance companies, educational systems, justice programs, housing and homelessness services, and rehabilitation and disability programs on the consequences of this injury; improved surveillance; adoption of systematic prevention policies combined with strong care systems; and better rehabilitation services.
