Adapted clinical practice guideline to improve care for TBI patients

An adapted clinical practice guideline is now available to support adults with traumatic brain injury who did not require acute care, or are able to care for themselves after being discharged from hospital.

The guideline was created by a working group of the Action Collaborative on TBI Care, associated with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Topics were selected and prioritized by individuals with lived experience and clinicians in community through a consensus-based approach. Recommendations were also drawn from existing clinical practice guidelines and harmonized using a systematic adaptation process.

The guideline contains priority recommendations for patients in an outpatient setting, during the first six months following injury. Important recommendations in the guideline include: assessment for risk of persisting symptoms, involvement of family members in care, screening and initiation of treatment for mental health disorders, and deciding if and when to refer to specialty care.
