A recent study surveyed 16 experts in order to assess the level of suitability of the ‘Sports Concussion Assessment Tool’ (SCAT5) for Para athletes with a visual impairment, a spinal cord injury, or a limb deficiency.
The study found that the SCAT5 is generally applicable for Para athletes with limb deficiencies or spinal cord injuries when minor modifications are made or the athletes are permitted to use their prostheses. However, it was also found that the SCAT5 tool is not feasible in Para athletes with visual impairments, therefore necessitating the implementation of alternative tests.
The findings will allow for use and modification of the SCAT5 for assessing Para athletes, as well as the development of alternative tools for Para athletes with visual impairment, in turn helping clinicians manage Para athletes in the case of a suspected concussion injury.
