A Canadian startup company is using spit to detect a concussion.
Created by HeadFirst, a startup company based out of the University of Waterloo, the spit test is designed to detect biomarkers that are released into your saliva in the event of a concussion.
The creators of the test say that their method is more affordable and more accurate than currently available concussion assessments, which rely on self-reporting, observation, or costly neurological tests.
A pilot study is currently being conducted with University of Waterloo athletes. Developers hope to gain regulatory approvals and sell the tests directly to concussion clinics, sports organizations, athletic departments, and health care facilities.
