Experiencing a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have consequences that may last for years. These TBIs occur when a sudden physical impact to the head causes damage to the brain tissue in the skull. This can cause long-term cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical disabilities.
Brain Injury Canada and the Canadian Traumatic Brain Injury Research Consortium are calling on the Canadian government to designate moderate to severe TBI as a chronic condition. This will improve data collection and open the door to improved health outcomes for the more than 165,000 Canadians who sustain a TBI every year, and the hundreds of thousands of Canadians already living with a TBI.
